This building was constructed in 1954 and housed Toronto's first drive-in restaurant known as the "Carousel". The brainchild of Al Pickard, 37 years old at the time, was an immediate success with servers on rollerskates delivering hamburgers and milkshakes to up to 45 cars parked out front!
The hockey player Tim Horton first discovered donut making in this building and Al helped Tim establish his first fast food venture. The next generation spent countless hours (and handfuls of tokens) playing such games as Space Invaders, Galaga, Ms. Pac Man and more as it was then known as "Video Invasion" a concept developed by Wayne Fromm in 1980. Video Invasion entertained tens of thousands of people over 20 years and brought such notable celebrities through the doors as the Elton John Band, Burton Cummings, Al Waxman and more.Wayne spent the next decades inventing toys and in fact "Disney's Beauty and the Beast Magic Talking Mirror" was invented in this building when Wayne thought of putting a mirror material over the top sign of Ms. Pac Man to see if the light would shine through.
Twisted Bagel was conceived with the help of the original Carousel owner Al Pickard, Wayne Fromm and Marni Ugar (whose first job was at Video Invasion and who started with and continues to work with Wayne on all of his inventions) who all came back to this iconic building to bring you fresh baked bagels and home cooked comfort foods.
We will respond to any comments you email and we thank you for coming back to this exciting corner.
Sincerely, Al, Wayne and Marni. email: wayne@twistedbagel.com
